Vladivostok, October 21, six bobcat hides were found by the customsstation staff during the inspection of private yacht, heading for SouthKorea. The owner of the yacht says that the hides were only thedecoration of the interior, but the experts say that the hides werelikely to be sold.

According to Natalia Pervushina, the WWF worker and the coordinator ofthe project TRAFFIC in the Far East, despite the fact that in Russiabobcat is a commercial species, it is included into the list ofendangered species. That means that the owner of the hides should havehad special documents on export of hides, approved by the localauthorities. He didn’t have these documents.

Today the yacht owner is penalized under the administrative law; thehides are confiscated.Pavel Fomenko, the coordinator of thebiodiversity preserving program conducted by Amursky Department of WWF,comments that the customs station staff made a brilliant job. Themajority of such detections take place on the land customs stations. Itis always easy to hide and hard to find the small part of contraband inthe ship.
